Bridgend Branch at the joint rally - Cardiff October 2010 | |||||
|
Bridgend UNISON Rallies Around! On Tuesday 19th October 2010 the TUC convened a rally of all major public sector unions at the Methodist Central Hall in London. Branch secretary, Jane Iles, commented that she had previously attended many such meetings but the turn out at this lobby was unprecedented. She added, "there was a real feel that the public sector unions were collectively co-operating in trying to achieve a common aim and this was to raise awareness that there is a real alternative to the current slash and burn policies of the Con-Dem government and their aim to ultimately obliterate public services." Delegates from Cymru/Wales then went on to meet most of the Labour MPs , however Huw Irranca- Davies offered his apologies. Madeleine Moon MP was present and pledged her support to our campaign but urged that as a collective, the focus had to be on the negative impact that the cuts would have on the vital and yet diverse services that we provide to the most vulnerable within our communities. On Wednesday 20th October a joint rally was held with UNISON and PCS (Public and Commercial Services Union) at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay. Again, there was another very healthy turnout with our Branch being well represented. Speakers included Plaid AM Leanne Wood and the First Minister Carwyn Jones, both of whom leant their support to our campaign against the likelihood of drastic cuts to Welsh public services. They were scathing in their attacks against those in Government who are driving this ideology forward. Janice Gregory AM, along with other AMs, also turned out to show their support. Thanks to all of you who were present. Jane Iles asked members to note, "It is important that the momentum we have initiated continues in order that we convince our own members and our communities at large that there is an alternative to mass redundancies and the ruination of public services we currently face but our voices must get louder, we must encourage greater participation and strength of purpose must be maintained because we're in for the long haul.
Here are a few photos of the event...
